Applying for a home

Becoming a homeowner is a significant step in one's life, and Sikeston Area Habitat wants to help. Qualified applicants ('partners') will achieve that depending, of course, on the financial and volunteer resources available. You must be a Sikeston area resident.

Step One is to be able to answer 'yes' to three basic questions:

  1. Do you have a steady income for a year or more?
  2. Do you have a need for safe, affordable housing?
  3. Do you have a willingness to help volunteers build a home for you?

Step Two is to contact us at info@sikestonhabitat.com or Post Office Box 722, Sikeston MO 63801 and request an application form. The form asks for more information about you and your family, your current residential situation, and your financial status. If you need help completing the application you can request assistance from the contact information on the form or the email address above.

Step Three is for us to review your application. If we need more information we'll contact you within 30 days, and notify you by mail within 30 days of receiving all the necessary information to determine if you qualify or not.

Once approved, Habitat Partners will join us in building this or another home. Partners must complete 50 hours of work before we can break ground on their new home. Once completed, a $200 down payment is required. Partners will also pay $300 closing costs when the completed home is transferred to the Partner family. Monthly interest-free mortgage payments currently are in the $400 range. Other details are spelled out in the final agreement.
